This idea from South Africa to make water from the fog dated back to 1901. Can you believe it? Let me tell you something! As the editor of this magazine and as I was reading this article, I was feeling more confident in my mission. Solutions are over there on the Internet to help, fix and improve our Blue Planet but too often they are hidden by the information overload, the language barrier or are just phasing out with time.

This is exactly what our dear Planet Earth has not!

Fog Harvesting

no water at all

very scarce water

water is too far

no well can be dig

no underground water available

even no electricity!

CHALLENGE

Producing Water:

even if there is no electricity?

with no well to dig out?

Use Fog To Collect Water – No Electricity Needed

Making Water With Fog

The process is simple: fine mesh netting is stretched between two posts perpendicular to the direction of the wind, to trap and coalesce the water droplets in the fog.

The water then runs down into a trough or gutter at the bottom of the panel and is collected and stored..

Simple and cheap solutions to prevent erosion anywhere in the world. They use only 10% of the total space avoiding the earth cover to be wash out.

Ephemeral Gullies

As I was reading this report about erosion, I thought to myself that this information was absolutely irrelevant to what I’m doing as the editor of The Planet Fixer Magazine. They were talking about the corn belt states, about the fact that they were losing ground which means a lot of erosion but nothing specific that I could use as a solution for the Planet Earth.

Then suddenly at the end of the report, the conclusion:

The most highly effective practice is to plant strip of grass or trees within or along the edge of the crop fields

Bottom line is this: what ever is the country you are living in, if you want to protect your land from erosion, you will need to have buffers i.e. strips of grass or trees within the edge of the crop fields.

This is the key, this is the secret, this is…your simple solution!

By the way, I like the contradictions! On one side this is the cornbelt where in the US they use the biggest tractors, chemicals, machines, pesticides and everything that is a no-no in my book. Nevertheless, they came up with super simple solutions that everybody can use!

SITUATION

Ever heard about ephemeral gullies? Probably not… like me! If you look at the picture on the right (up right) you will see what it is. They are just gullies that reappears rapidly after a rain (and disappears with the sun) where farmers have tilled and planted over natural depressions in the land. They form “pipelines” that swiftly carry away the water the earth cannot absorb…and all the bad stuff with it! And believe me! There is a lot of bad stuff in it!

CHALLENGE

reduce soil erosion

reduce polluted runoff

reduce gully erosion

SOLUTION

Strips Of Grass Fight Erosion

simplest but most highly effective practice is to plant strips of grass or trees within or along the edges of crop fields. Grass strips are called filter strips because they filter out sediment and pollutants running off the edge of the field

strips of grass or trees planted next to a stream are called riparian buffers. Riparian buffers are a last line of defense — filtering runoff water just before it enters a stream or ditch

contour strips are planted, as the name implies, along the contours of a sloping field. Contour strips slow and diminished runoff and filter mud and pollutants out of water as it flows across a field.

vegetative barriers are very narrow strips of stiff stemmed vegetation planted across a sloping field to slow the water running down the slope, allowing mud and other pollutants to settle out

RESULTS

These simple practices can be highly effective. A review of published studies found that buffers trapped:

41 to 100 percent of the sediment

9 to 100 percent of the runoff water

27 to 96 percent of the phosphorus

7 to 100 percent of the nitrate

Two different arrangements are being tested. One converts 10 percent of the cropland into grass strips located at the bottoms of sloping fields. The second converts puts 10 percent into contour grass strips.

There is a report that had just been published recently about organic farming, not organic gardening but organic farming which is a complete different ballgame. What puzzled me is that this report was mentioned here and there on the web but I feel it did not get the exposure he should have.

This report is from the Rodale Institute. It took me a while to read it carefully, not because it’s a long report, it just 13 pages, but because it’s packed with hard facts, statistics, references, all from 30 years of experimenting organic farming.

Here are just a few facts from this report:

Organic yields match conventional yields.

Organic outperforms conventional in years of drought.

Organic farming systems build rather than deplete soil organic matter, making it a more sustainable system.

Organic farming uses 45% less energy and is more efficient.

Conventional systems produce 40% more greenhouse gases.

Organic farming systems are more profitable than conventional.

I added the Rodale-institute-the-farming-systems-trial-celebrating-30-years to the Planet Fixer Public Library

Frame it, keep it under your pillow, print it in gold letters, talk about it, Twitter it again, this report about organic farming is worth it’s weight of gold!

What Is The Planet Earth?

It is just that…a ship! It is very very important that us, as human beings, think about the Earth not as a planet, not as something from which we are separated from. Far form that! This is why in the future, you will see me as the editor of the Planet Fixer Magazine, using the word ship rather than any other word!

The sense of belonging to something bigger than us is much stronger when we talk about a ship than a planet. We are all really in the same boat. The challenge is that we have many many captains all wanting to head in different directions all the time. That will not work. You know that, I know that…we know that!

Healing The Blue Planet

This is why The Planet Fixer Magazine is born. Let’s all these captains fight meanwhile we can focus our attention in finding right now solutions that will fix, heal and improve the Mother Earth Ship. Believe me they exist. The challenge is:

to find them first

collect these solutions

organize them in neat categories

publish them to share it with the world

Earth Information

The Planet Fixer Magazine is the very first step in sharing right now tools on earth information. I already created a directory that will be used to display the information in a more friendly manner. It will be far more easier to retrieve any kind of solutions because they will all be cross referenced.

This is my mission, my goal in life and this will be my little contribution to our planet, to our Ship should I say!
